Yaletown Records is situated on the unceded and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We acknowledge that this land was never surrendered and that we live, work, and create on it as guests.
As the founder of Yaletown Records, I was born on traditional Kanien'kehá:ka territory, also known as the land of the Mohawk Nation, but I am not of that land. My ancestry traces back to Eastern European immigrants, and I acknowledge that I have benefitted from living on Indigenous land without carrying the weight of Indigenous displacement.
My connection to Indigenous culture began in high school, where I had the privilege of growing up alongside students from the Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Nation. Many of my friends travelled daily by bus from the reserve. We studied together, played sports, and built community. The daughter of the chief at that time was in my class. I spent some time on the reserve, learning firsthand about the richness of Mohawk culture, the strength and power of its people, and the quiet wisdom they carry. And for that I am very grateful. These early experiences and friendships shaped my values. While I am not Indigenous, I have always considered myself a strong ally—one who listens, learns, and honours Indigenous leadership and knowledge, especially in spaces of creativity and culture.
My own relationship to this land has also been forged through time spent outdoors—hiking the forests, walking the ocean’s edge, and wandering mountain trails. These moments in nature are where I return to myself. The land feeds my soul and creativity, offers clarity, and grounds my work as an artist and business owner. It’s in the moss, the mist, the rhythm of the seasons that I find inspiration. Nature is not separate from my artistry; it’s the container that holds it all. This connection deepens my respect for Indigenous teachings that honour the land as a living, breathing relative—not a resource.
At Yaletown Records, we are committed to building an artistic ecosystem that respects Indigenous sovereignty, amplifies underrepresented voices, and upholds the values of care, connection, and cultural responsibility. We acknowledge the past, we pay attention to the present, and we strive to contribute to a more equitable and respectful future.
This acknowledgment is not an opening or closing statement. It’s an invitation to continued listening, action, and evolution.
